Many times we have attempted to discipline ourselves in some area of our life, only to soon become discouraged and quit. Why is this the case?
When discipline has no lasting, heartfelt goal or direction, it becomes drudgery. For example, when you have attempted to discipline yourself for daily prayer and you fall asleep two or three days straight, you soon give up and stop praying. When you attempt to diet or exercise and you miss a few days from your routine, it won't be long before you quit altogether.
We must purpose in our hearts to discipline ourselves and determine never to quit. Our goal should be to get to our destination with victory in whatever area of life we are dealing with. For the Christian, pleasing God should be our number one motivation. We must be determined to reach our goal and finish our course.
In the book of Galatians chapter 5 verses 22 and 23, we find that self-control is one of the primary indicators that we lead a spirit led life and not a life of carnality and flesh. Nobody said that discipline is easy, but it is necessary!
